Mayor Daniel Rivera announces the submission of his Fiscal Year 2020 budget. This is the Mayor’s sixth budget submission in his time as Mayor. “This budget continues my administrations focus on making our city safer and supporting the turnaround effort in our schools,” said Mayor Daniel Rivera. “In addition to focusing on public safety and schools, I have proposed a 0% tax increase. This is a budget that, if passed on time with no issues, will put us on the fast track to getting out of receivership. I look forward to working with the City Council to get it passed by June 30th.”
FY2020 Budget Highlights:
No Increase in Property Tax
- Adds 13 new police officers- 10 net new officers. This brings the total number of sworn officers to 160.
- Opens the Lawrence Public Library on Saturdays and Sundays
- Funds Firefighters Contract
- Puts money aside for both Police contracts
- Reorganization of a Health and Human Services Department under a new Director
- New assistant city clerk for elections
- Funds an added election in 2020
- Funds new trash hauling agreement
- Continues to fund added Inspectional Services staff
- Funds a FY2020 Capital Improvement Plan
- Funds the Lawrence Public Schools requests at 89% of request state aid did most of the lifting-giving the schools $700K in one-time money
